Office Design Trends That Are Taking Over

Everyone knows that a well-designed and laid out office can increase productivity and workflow and lead to a boost in morale.

So what are the hot trends that you need to know about?

Office
Plan

Offices are still largely open plan and the memory of worker cubby holes are now largely a distant memory. The trend is extended across hierarchies too, with many senior staff no longer expecting to have their own glass-walled office with a view! This type of working can facilitate communication and teamwork, although those who need quiet spaces will need to access quieter pods or zones when the buzz gets a bit noisy!

Modular
Spaces

Facilitating the open plan aesthetic is the move towards modular, flexible furniture that can be used for different purposes and be freely moved around. Think of cubes which can be used to section off areas and for informal seating. Office screens are used to create privacy or to display work in progress. Folding doors can section off larger rooms for smaller gatherings and office chairs on wheels can be easily relocated. This trend looks set to stay as people demand increasingly flexible modes of work.

Hiding The Wires

The rise in technology has led to an attendant increase in wiring, and office desks can rapidly look cluttered and unattractive unless wiring management solutions are put into play. Smart design features and wireless networking is helping to mitigate this problem - which is largely aesthetic, but which also has health and safety implications from trip and slip risks.

Lounge
Areas

A lot of larger offices are now creating breakout areas in the style of a lounge, in which workers can meet with each other, host a client or simply take a break in a more informal setting. These areas are typically decorated with comfortable office furniture such as sofas, plants, soft colours, water machines and reading materials.

Bringing the Outside In

Plants in the office offer real health benefits - purifying the air and removing a build-up of CO2. The trend for green or living walls is a growing one and most offices now have plants designed to provide a feeling of calm and relaxation, while looking beautiful.

Community Tables

In the same way that Japanese dining often uses a communal table in a restaurant, many forward-thinking offices are now putting large community tables into offices that allow workers to come and go as they please with their laptops and devices. These spaces are sociable, energised and designed to foster creativity and teamwork. What's not to love?
